Southern Brooklyn Flips it Blue at the Midterms!

Last night was a good night for Democrats in New York and especially here in Bay Ridge. Our districts have turned over a new leaf, one that will be led by our home team - Andrew Gounardes, Max Rose & Mathylde Frontus! We flipped the House! We dominated the NYS Senate! We solidified control of the NYS Assembly!

Nationwide turnout blew the doors off previous midterm elections and Southern Brooklyn was no exception, with approximately 50% voter participation. More and more elections are being decided on the slimmest of margins and we’ve seen that here, as well. Which means that, truly, every vote counted.

We couldn’t be prouder of our club members for giving their all to support our endorsed candidates. No stone was left unturned and records for volunteer participation were shattered. Our engagement, along with the collaboration of countless other community groups, activists, political clubs, and issue-based organizations built out a ground game that flipped New York City’s last red entrenchment blue.

We kept the promise we made to ourselves in November 2016 and our political landscape is the better for it. Thanks to every person who knocked a door, made a call, convinced a friend or loved one, helped get out the vote, worked a poll site! Onward!

Andrew Gounardes Wins Primary & Prepares to Unseat Golden in November

Congratulations to our endorsed candidate Andrew Gounardes, and our district, on the #TeamGounardes primary victory! And thank you to the many members of the Bay Ridge Democrats who put in the hours to make this success possible.

Our club endorsed Andrew because he will fight for every member of our district. He has comprehensive plans to bring voices like ours to Albany by giving riders from every borough a vote on the MTA board, by targeting corruption and implementing his “Golden Rule” legislation to bar politicians from spending campaign funds for personal or family business use, by passing the Reproductive Health Act and the New York Health Act, by repealing the Urstadt Law which undermines New York City's ability to enact its own rent laws, and more.

Andrew has also received meaningful endorsements from unions such as the New York State United Teachers and 32BJ Local SEIU, as well as issues-based organizations like Moms Demand Action, the National Organization for Women and the Stonewall Democrats of New York. He has additionally garnered the support of many local elected officials and Democratic clubs throughout the city.

These are only a few examples of Andrew’s many priorities for and support within Senate District 22. The Bay Ridge Democrats are excited to keep up the canvassing, calling and public conversation to propel him into office.

Max Rose Wins NY-11 Primary!

Congratulations to our endorsed candidate Max Rose for his resounding primary victory!

Now that we know Max will be leading NY-11 to victory in our push to take back the House this November, Bay Ridge Democrats will be boosting our efforts to support the campaign and turn out the vote in Brooklyn. It's going to take a lot of work to oust Donald Trump's candidate Dan Donovan and our members will be on the ground knocking doors, making calls and spreading the word for Max.

Two Long-Standing Members of Bay Ridge Democrats Among Endorsed Candidates at June Meeting

The Bay Ridge Democrats convened their statewide endorsement meeting on June 7, 2018 and walked out of the room with two long-standing members as endorsed candidates.

Andrew Gounardes took the endorsement for Senate District 22 and current Club President Chris McCreight received the endorsement for Assembly District 46, both by overwhelming majorities. “I think these endorsements really emphasize the continuing momentum of the Bay Ridge Democrats,” said BRD Vice President Reem Jaafar. “Our club was proud to help elect Council Member Brannan from our ranks and we know that our members are fired up and ready to get our candidates into office.”

Members of the Bay Ridge Democrats were also pleased to endorse Adam Baumel for Assembly and Joanne Seminara and Ralph Perfetto for District Leaders in the 64th Assembly District.

“It’s really an honor to be endorsed by the Bay Ridge Democrats, a club I helped found nearly a decade ago,” said McCreight. “I’m running for Assembly to stand up for everybody, no matter age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion or income. From Bay Ridge to Brighton Beach, every neighborhood deserves to be treated equally. We need to fix our subways, fight for our public schools, protect seniors, pass sensible and effective gun control laws, tackle the opioid epidemic, and stand up to President Trump on the state level.”

Andrew Gounardes echoed these sentiments. “I’m honored to have the support of the Bay Ridge Democrats, one of the most active and impactful political clubs in all of Brooklyn,” he said. “Our grassroots campaign is growing at a rapid pace and with your help, we will bring about the change our community needs.”

Candidates for statewide offices began collecting signatures at the beginning of petitioning season on June 5th and will have approximately one month to obtain the needed numbers to get onto the ballot.

Bay Ridge Democrats Endorse Max Rose for Congress

The Bay Ridge Democrats proudly endorsed Max Rose for New York’s 11th Congressional seat at their  March endorsement meeting. “We need a member of Congress with the courage to take on Washington, D.C. and solve the challenges Bay Ridge has struggled with for far too long,” said club president Chris McCreight. “Whether it’s securing funding to improve the R-Train, passing laws to protect our children from gun violence, or fighting for universal and affordable health care, Max will be leading the charge. That’s the kind of bold leadership we deserve.”

Rose’s credentials in public service include his time as the Director of Public Engagement for the late Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson where he helped to develop the Begin Again program, allowing thousands of New Yorkers the opportunity to resolve outstanding low-level offenses without fear of arrest. He also served as Chief of Staff for Brightpoint Health, a nonprofit health organization which operates health clinics and substance abuse programs. Rose, a U.S. Army veteran who earned both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in the war in Afghanistan, continues to serve in the National Guard.

Councilman Justin Brannan has also given his personal endorsement to Rose. “This year, I am laser-focused on doing everything I can to help take back the House. That’s why we need people like Max Rose,” said Brannan. “Max has the guts to take on special interests and the backbone to fight like a beast for the middle-class day in and day out.”

The additional federal endorsement from the March meeting was for Kirsten Gillibrand for Senate. Federal primaries will be held on June 26th with the general election to follow on November 6th.  Find your polling place here.

BRD will make state level endorsements at the June 7th meeting.
